Full refund given if reserved space is canceled two days before class or class is canceled. A $1 processing fee will be charged for space canceled but not if class is canceled.

Plant a Box with Salad Greens
Make your own portable summer salad greens box in this intensive two hour workshop! We will assemble boxes which can be moved to shade and cooler yard areas in the summer, extending your lettuce harvesting season. Then we will plant your box with heat tolerant, delicious salad greens. Please bring a cordless drill, hand saw or staple gun if you can, we will supply everything you need to build and plant your box.

Urban Wilderness Gardening
Join us in the Goddess Garden Atlanta to experience a unique eco-friendly, non-invasive method of gardening. Urban Wilderness Gardening, taught by Shasta Zaring, will show you how to interact with nature, create habitat, and work with the existing Georgia plant species. This form recycles all garden materials and uses no pesticides or herbicides. ZaringÕs style of gardening is a form of deep ecology, creating harmony and rapport with nature and the spirit of the land. As Shasta says, "A bit of wilderness is good for the soul." Mini Cob Play House: You can take it home!
Even though the cob house is complete, we still offer opportunites for kids of all ages to come get their hands in the mud. Introducing your very own miniature cob house making class full of imaginative possibility. All materials are provided including decorative items. Bring your imagination, a parent, and clothes to get muddy in. Ages 4 and up.

Summer Vegetables Sowing Class: The timing is perfect
Summer is the time for beautiful, colorful, bountiful vegetables! Join us in planting a rainbow of hot weather vegetables: peppers, eggplant, tomato, okra, southern peas, yard long beans, malabar spinach and so much more! A few herbs too! Please bring recyclable containers to start your seeds, which will be ready in time for great summer production.

Needle Felting: A Flower Garden
Join Eiko Taylor for a creative e evening of needle felting without water. You will use a special, barbed felting needle to push the top layer of wool into deeper layers to create your own 14"by 11" docrative piece. The unique property of wool fiber that allows it to "stick" to itself will cause the wool to felt, without the need for soap and water. Flowers, ladybugs, the sun? Be creative. Eiko is a juried artist participating in local Atlanta art shows displaying her beautiful felted work.

The Garden has a wealth of broken pieces perfect for creating beautiful mosaic pieces and Chris Tholl has a wealth of "how-to" mosaic knowledge to share with you. Combined with your creativity, you will leave with a beautiful mosaic birdbath that will brighten any spot in your garden and provide a fun playground for the birds. A don't miss hands-on class. It’s a good idea to eat greens, but how do you cook them? From traditional to the outrageously yummy, Charli Vogt will guide you this hands-on cooking class. Bring your aprons and get ready to chop, cook, and eat these wonderful nutrient packed greens. Charli is a nurse and herbalist who loves to create anything that a person can create in a kitchen.

Buggin' Out and Living in a Garden of Weeden
Attracting and co-existing with the insect ecosystem of your garden and organic weed control. Do not fear the Japanese Beetle or the dandelion! Learn the function of bugs and weeds in the sustainable, organically balanced garden. Discover ways to attract beneficial bugs, lower "bad bug" populations and to control your weeds.

Worm Compost: The Basics of Great Worm P-P!
Learn about the benefits of composting with worms. According to the EPA, approximately 10% of the waste stream is food and over 38% of the waste stream is paper. These materials can be removed from the waste stream and used as resources, specifically food and bedding, for a worm bin. It’s easy, fun, odorless and produces a great soil additive! Class participants will learn how to house, feed, harvest and care for their own worms. Be prepared to roll-up your sleeves and make your own worm composting bin! Each participant will be provided with a bin, instructions, and worms. You will go home with a complete, ready to use vermiculture system! From ages 6 and up, accompanied by a parent.

Garden First Aid Kit
Herbal salves to sooth the work roughend hands, the cuts and scrapes, the bug bites and sunburn will all be included in this class. Having worked with herbs for over 12 years, Penney Balmes, an herbalist and owner of 11:11 Teahouse will share with you her recipes and experience of creating healing salves. Each participant will leave with samples to take home.

Japanese Cooking: Savory Pancakes and Fried Noodles
Anyone who has participated in Eiko Taylor's cooking classes will tell you that you are in for some delicious fun. Eiko will introduce us to okonmiyaki (cook what you like) which is a Japanese dish consisting of a pan-fried batter cake and various ingredients and also yakisoba, a fried noodle dish. Join us for a hands-on delicious class and save room, because we eat what we make. Oishii!

Build a Rain Barrel for Your Garden
Prepare you garden for the summer heat by building your very own rain barrel. Join Rob Cleveland for this fun workshop where you will leave with your own heavy duty rain barrel made from a modified garbage can and the skills to build more at your home. The class will end with a tour of the instructor's own rain barrel system at his home located near the Oakhurst Garden.

A Living Wreath: Succulents
Succulents are really cool -- undemanding, easy to grow, beautiful, and the newest thing in the horticulture world. Join Amy Handler, succulent enthusiast, for a fun two hours of creating a living wreath to put on display at your house. Each person will leave with a simple, yet elegant creation that can last for years.

Mushrooms and three classes on how they can change your life.
During her time at Evergreen College, seasoned mushroom enthusiast Brandi Arts interned with Paul Stamets, a world reknowned mushroom expert, who developed the term and process of "mycoremediation" to restore topsoil to endangered ecosystems. Brandi will share with you a wealth of knowledge on how you can incorporate fungi into your life and garden. She is also a trained herbalist having completed Rosemary Gladstar's curriculum.

Introduction to Mycology: How mushrooms can save the world!
Want to find out how mushrooms are saving forest all over the world? Or how mushrooms can improve the productivity and nutritional value of your homegrown produce? Brandi Arts will share her knowledge with handouts and slides showing how mushrooms are doing great work all over the world turning trash into rich soil. The class will also include a hands-on activity in the Garden preparing an area innoculating paper recyclables with mushrooms to eventually be turned into topsoil.

Make and Take Your own Mushroom Kit
Hmmm... yummy. Pearl oysters for you to grow at home. Brandi will lead this hands-on class from start to finish showing you how to pasteurize the straw, innoculate it, stuff into bags, and take home for future mushroom growing. She will also discuss how mushrooms can be grown both in your backyard and commercially.

Make and Take Your own Innoculated Log
Want to grow edible mushrooms in your backyard? In this hands-on class, each participant will leave with a log drilled and filled with innoculated pink oyster mushroom plugs. Learn the how and the fun of growing your own mushrooms!

Soapstone Pendants
Paul McClendon, Primitive Skills Extraordinaire, enjoys turning natural items into tools of the trade, similar to what the Native Americans would have done. Make a soapstone pendant using simple yet effective techniques.

Exploring Insects

The Stream Runneth
The Garden is lucky to offer many ecosystems to explore including the living Shoal Creek that flows behind it. Nets, gloves, and boots will be provided for a fun hour looking for and at fish, crawdads and whatever else may catch your eye. Join Don Lake, a member of the Shoal Creek Watershed Alliance.

Fermentation: The Making of Kraut
Learn the secrets of making your own sauerkraut and fermented vegetables. Almost all cultures have their own "pickles" that assist digestion. We will make sauerkraut and a carrot-ginger fermented pickle. A guest teacher will demonstrate making Kefir (a fermented milk product). Be ready to slice and dice. This is a participatory class. Bring quart jars to take your own kraut and carrots home to ferment. This class is taught by one our "regulars," Charli Vogt, RN, who loves doing anything that involves the kitchen. She is an herbalist and a teacher and sees individual clients in her office for health consultations.

Effective Watering Techniques: Making an Olla
Olla or "oh-ya" is a traditional Native American method of direct-watering garden plants. In this class we will make our own Olla and learn how to use it, and other methods to make the most of your reclaimed and recycled water.

Two Hand Clay Work Classes with Christine Tholl in the Garden
Christine is a co-director of the Red Wall Studio and Gallery in Decatur. She teaches folks of all ages the fun phases of art and ceramics. We are lucky to have her offer her expertise at the Garden. The classes are open to both creative families and individuals. Christine will take your finished product and fire it at the studio.

From whimsical to botanical, these handmade windchimes handcrafted by you will delight your yard for a long time.

Seed Saving: Saving Spring and Summer!
This is a hands-on, part-one, seed saving class (next class in the fall). We will learn some basic seed saving, drying and identification techniques to cull our own spring and early summer garden seeds from short season annuals and spring perennials. Discover tricks and tips of adapting plants to our climate, and come to understand a basic seed saving timetable.

Peppers, Tomatoes, Basil -- Oh My! Summer Seasonal Cooking for your Kitchen
Join Charli Vogt in this hands-on cooking class featuring cool summer seasonal dishes using fresh summer produce. Bring your aprons and get ready to chop, mix, and cook followed by a delicious meal eaten together. Charli is a nurse and herbalist who loves to create anything that a person can create in a kitchen. She is now the host of her weekly radio show "Beyond the Measuring Cup" on AM 1260 Sandy Springs.

Wild Things
Oakhurst Community Garden Project Summer 2008 nature classes for young ones

Baby chicks are the perfect little animals to hold gently in the palm of your hand and this spring that is just what our Wild Thing explorers will do. Each week, the children will participate in making sure that the chicks grow into strong chickens and ultimately join our current flock. Going into the summer, the children will focus on harvesting fresh vegetables from the garden and preparing yummy recipes. Vegetable gardening, garden exploration, creative art projects, and yummy snacks are always on the schedule.
