Baby Chicks in the City: Hatching Your Own Flock
Join Walter Reeves, The Georgia Gardener, for an educational evening on how to order, incubate, hatch, and raise your new chicken flock. He'll discuss build-your-own versus store-bought incubators and specific techniques to insure success. He will share his personal experiences with chickens and eggs, which began when he was three on his family's egg farm! Walter plans to have both preserved embryos and freshly hatched chicks on hand.

Grafting Fruit Trees
Have you ever wondered how weeping flowering cherries were produced on a straight trunk or how to make two different color flowers appear on one tree? How are those "fruit cocktail trees" made featuring different fruit on the same tree or how to clone your favorite trees without having to root them? Grafting is a technique of tree propagation and formation that has been around for more than 2 millennia. Rob Hamilton will discuss grafting's history and various uses, tools and techniques. A must-have skill for anyone who has a serious interest in trees or general plant propagation. Leave this class with the basic knowledge you need to graft your own trees.

Olla: A Terracotta Watering Vessel
Using a coil technique, you will make an Olla with a medium size neck that will ultimately hold a gallon of water. Place water in the top of this ancient watering device and the Olla slowly releases water to your plants. Anyone can make this - kids, too.

Permaculture: An Introduction to Living in Harmony with the Land
The basics of Permaculture, including principles, designing landscapes, ethics, water catchment and concepts such as Food Forests, Home Ecosystems, and Closed-Loop Systems vs. Through-Put Systems and much more will be covered in this full day workshop. Students will do a walk-about in the Oakhurst Garden to illustrate concepts, and will end the day with a demonstration of a Permaculture related project. Bob Burns and Isabel Crabtree both received their Permaculture Design Certificate and together the Central Georgia Permaculture Institute, an educational initiative at www.georgiapermaculture.com. They teach and practice permaculture in the Southeast and and are creating a homestead near Milledgeville, GA. Please plan to bring a bagged lunch or eat locally.

Cooking with Sun and Fire
Join Bob Burns and Isabel Crabtree of the Central Georgia Permaculture Institute and learn how to cook with a Solar Cooker (no fuel needed), a "Rocket Stove." Also included will be cooking on embers and over a campfire. And what the hay is a "Hay Box?" We will cook some simple basics like rice, beans, potatoes, etc. and will give you a demonstration on how to make your own rocket stove. Plans and handouts included in the class. Note: This is an OUTDOOR workshop so if it rains the class will be canceled and rescheduled.

These wonderful Stand Dolls are really easy to assemble once you have all the parts in place. At 6 inches tall, these dolls are great on nature table displays, in doll houses or in castle play. Each participant will leave with their own Royal Person and all the how-to's to make many more.

Make a Nuno Felted Scarf - A Year Round Scarf
Eiko Taylor will show you how to take chiffon cloth, sheep fleece, and yarn and create a one of a kind, lightweight scarf. Using soap and water and a physical molding, the students will adhere the sheeps wool to the chiffon. Sheep wool comes in so many just in time for winter. Class is for both beginner and advanced.

This activity is free of peanut products. f your child is under 6 we request a parent to be present.

Crafty Fun
Handmade Valentines Using Recycled Papermaking Techniques
Join Katy DeMent, a self-taught papermaker for this two-hour romantically themed workshop. Participants will learn about traditional papermaking while exploring more modern paper making techniques all with a Valentine theme. Learn about surface design, texture, and composition while creating sheets of recycled paper featuring, glitters, ribbons, flower petals and vintage ephemera. We will form sheets of paper with a variety of recycled and plant fibers as well as the creation of "wet on wet collages" that can include mementos from home (family mementos, photos, plants, etc). These papers, when dry, will render lovely gifts to share with your loved ones. This event will include hot chocolate to warm your heart and your soul.

Sprites for Spring: Garden Fairies
Come release your inner fairy with Kyla Zaro-Moore! Celebrate the beginning of spring by crafting a garden fairy. Using scraps, wire, beads, and elements from the garden, we will create whimsical garden guardians to look after our plots (or entertain our houseplants) when we cannot. Adults and children will delight in this playful class. All ages, children accompanied by an adult.

Impressions of Nature
We will collect leaves and textures from throughout the garden and use them to create a spoon rest and wall plaque out of clay. Celebrate spring with impressions of growth and abundance. This is a great activity for ages 3 months - 5 years old. A parent must be present. We will be presenting different techniques to decorate and print your child's hands or feet onto a mug. Paper, Printmaking, and Prose for Teens and Adults - Spring Break
Join Katy DeMent in this 3-day workshop. Students will draw from nature, make paper from plants and recycled materials. Their sketches will be transferred into mono prints on their papers that will be shared with the whole class and bound into books along with their sketches and writings A print exchange will create a unique sample of the whole class' experience. For ages 12 to adult.
April 6: Drawing from nature, observation and haiku. Begin drawings to transfer to plexiglass, for etching
April 7: Making papers from plants and recycled materials, introduction to collage in handmade papers. April 8: Printmaking, transfer drawings in to several different types of prints to include Monoprints and plexi etching. Print on handmade and other papers. Bind books together and print exchange.

Students will explore honey bee biology, assemble beehive equipment, establish honey bee colonies, maintain the observation bee hive, harvest and extract honey, cook with honey, and learn to assess the condition of a honey bee colony and its needs. Students can register for one or both weeks. For ages 7-12.

2010 Beekeeping Summer Camp
Come make new friends and enjoy fun, hands-on beekeeping activities that will show you what it is to be a beekeeper. Maybe you will become one yourself!
