Garden Club: Art in the Garden
An extension
of an already-existing knitting club at Glennwood Academy,
this program is an exploration of art made from natural elements. The
goals of this program are to 1) make the connection between
every day objects and their natural origins and 2) create
functional art projects from the garden. The
culmination of this program will be a booth at the Decatur Arts Festival, staffed
by the children and filled with their art. The two main projects will be
creating an educational textile-themed garden filled with dye and fiber plants,
and building and learning to use simple looms. Each participant will document
his or her art and work in the garden and develop a portfolio. This program
will not only build gardening and artistic skills, but impart valuable experience
in marketing and business.

Stone Soup and Gourmet Girls
Stone Soup is offered in conjunction with the Refugee
Family Services of Clarkston (a refugee services organization)
and the Samuel L. Jones Boys and Girls Club in Oakhurst. The
program focuses on cross-cultural friendship and food, as well
as the typical components of summer camp like arts and crafts
and games. 12 refugee children and 12 local children meet together
weekly to swap home recipes and make healthy, cross-cultural
feasts from produce grown in the garden. |
