Decatur Recreation Center - 3:00 Project
Renfroe Middle
School After School Service Learning Program
The
3 O'clock Project of the Decatur Recreation Center at Renfroe
Middle School includes a Service Learning component. For
Spring term 2006, the group has 2 aims: 1) cleaning up the
stream that runs through Oakhurst Community Garden and 2)
making the cafeteria food better by creating connections
with local chefs and farmers. The students involved
in this program will learn what it takes to plan and implement
projects that have a positive impact on their community
Decatur Recreation Center -
Junior Master Gardeners
Whiz Kids After School Program, Glennwood Academy
This
program is based on the Master Gardener program for adults
and offers fun and creative learning activities culminating
in certification and recognition. Each term focuses
on a fundamental element of gardening, such as Soils and
Water, Fruits and Vegetables, or Insects in the Garden. Participants
complete service projects related to their explorations throughout
the school year, and come away well-versed in basic garden
building blocks.
Decatur Recreation Center -
The All Girls Green Team
The All Girls Green Team is offered
through the Decatur Recreation Center’s Summer Camp
program. Twelve middle school girls learn to be entrepreneurs
by earning stipends for working in the garden, starting their
own environmentally responsible business and setting up their
own savings accounts at Decatur First Bank. They also learn
about health, teamwork and the environment. On Mondays the Green Team is joined by 12 girls from Refugee Family
Services for delicious recipes from all over the world -- from fruit smoothies
to baba ganouj.
